Psychiatric Medication: Basics for Therapists
Therapists often hear about medication effects before a patient’s next prescribing appointment. This introductory presentation gives therapists a practical framework for understanding common medications used for depression, anxiety, and ADHD, while keeping prescribing decisions with the patient’s medication clinician. It opens with a brief review of neurotransmitters, then discusses SSRIs, SNRIs and other antidepressants; medications used for anxiety, including benzodiazepines; and stimulant and non-stimulant ADHD treatments.
Participants will examine typical treatment timelines, common side effects, and medication-related safety concerns. A brief case illustrates how to respond to early SSRI side effects, track later changes in panic symptoms, and continue therapy for avoidance. The emphasis throughout is on observing changes in mood, functioning, sleep, appetite, adherence, and safety; documenting those observations; and communicating relevant concerns to the prescriber.
